@Neil well I hope it goes well, I need someone to go with, seems pointless my boss going (however I suppose it would be good for him to see what a good investment I am ;-)) when he doesn’t know about web design / development.

@Peter yes, I am actually working on a screencast for Neil right now, on how to make a polymorphic permissions system for use in a social app. If you have any questions or problems please don’t hesitate to ask me, I’ll do my best to help with anything. How long have you been using Rails for? Or have you just started?

With regards the social e-commerce engine, basically the case study is a website called TheWineGod, which is going to be one of my boss’s companies.

The idea is that when you buy wine, usually it tells you roughly what it’s good with e.g. ‘fish’, or ‘meat’, but rarely the actual details. When you buy a wine you might discover it goes well with a particular dish or ingredient, so the idea behind the site is you can ask people who’ve bought the bottle you’re looking at ‘Do you think it would go well with… X Y Z?’, they can then reply and earn points if the person buys it and likes it.

A user will be able to do things like setup their own Wine cellar so they can show the wines they like and list their reviews, again earning points when people buy from their cellar and like what they buy.

The points will lead to coupons, money off etc - like having a loyalty card at a supermarket. Aside from that, I am up for suggestions on how to increase interaction between users.

I’d love to visit Amsterdam, especially with people who know the city, all my housemates say it’s a beautiful place, so if you guys would be happy with me tagging along and if I can get time off work, I’d certainly take you guys up on the offer of meeting up.

@Peter - I’ve been guilty of bouncing from one frame of mind to another - but now I think it’s good to get a variety of experiences throughout the day. Therefore I’ll try out news apps, I’ll break-out and browse the net for 30 mins with no specific goals other than to find new things, and I’ll even go back to old apps which still have good market share. I like to use the latest and greatest, but I also like to spend time using the generic tools which my family (and the rest of the UK mainstream web users) use for their jobs, e.g. Outlook.

At the moment, I think I’ve hit a sweet spot. I’m willing to try out new stuff (I just took up Git and received my GitHub invitation, woohoo!), but I don’t feel like I’m distracted by it, and I’m often finding the new tools are beneficial. I’m still ploughing through my ToDo list, and that’s what keeps me sane!

@Paul Graham & YC - there’s a whole load of UK guys making the jump, and I’m SO jealous! The ClickPass and Auctomatic guys are really flying. Peter, have you checked them out?

@Dominiek - it’s great to hear you’re using the wine apps. Corkd is a real success story. I wish I drank more wine!

I cannot stress enough the importance of using webapps. Some of the potential startuppers I know still hardly use any. I find this mindboggling. Let alone the convenience that for instance del.icio.us and RSS bring, - think of all the time saved! - there is a much more significant aspect for us entrepreneurs. To recognize opportunities as they arise, we must submerge ourselves in this new world. We must be intimately familiar with its latest developments, been exposed to a hundred different user interfaces, and become discerning users. If we don’t live in the new paradigm, our thinking will still be grounded in the old. How can we invent the automobile if we’ve never before seen an engine?

This acclimatization process takes a long time, so when you initiate it two months before you start your startup, you’re already too late, and grossly so. Therefore, consider this one carefully: if you’re the kind of person who is satisfied with the way he does things right now or is reluctant to try out new stuff today, then maybe innovation isn’t really in your nature?
